Highland Games in Verdun this Sunday
From the caber toss to the Scottish fiddle to the tug-of-war, there’s something for everyone at the Montreal Highland Games, which will take place on the grounds of the Douglas Hospital in Verdun, on August 4th from 9am. There are several related events leading up to the big day; if you were out and about in Verdun on Thursday you might have witnessed the Promenade of Cabers on Wellington, or the Scots in the Park celebration outside the borough hall on Verdun ave.
Tonight, Friday, August 2, at 8 pm, you’re invited to a Wee Cèilidh just before the big weekend! Bagpipers, fiddlers, dancers and more. Location: Burgundy Lion Pub, 2496 Notre Dame Street West, Montreal.

Driving? Taking the Metro?
Guests are encouraged to use our free shuttle service to the Games from Angrignon Metro Station. Shuttles will run approximately every 20 minutes from 8:00 am until 7:00 pm.
The Games asks you to bring your own reusable water bottle, to help reduce plastic waste.
Verdun Beach: City explains when swimming is allowed, and not
Have you visited Verdun’s new urban beach yet? Are you worried you’ll go and be prevented from swimming because of poor water quality? On the borough of Verdun page of the City of Montreal website, there is a French text explaining the protocol for allowing swimming or not on any given day. More importantly, it gives a phone number to call to find out if you’ll be allowed in the water if you go to the beach located behind the Verdun Auditorium.
That information line is: 514 280-0789. A bilingual message tells you if swimming is permitted on the day of the call. Also, if you’re passing by, a red flag will be flown on the beach on days when swimming is not permitted. A lifeguard stays on site to inform people that it’s not safe to swim.
The borough wants citizens to know that the beach itself is open every day from 10am to 7pm, even if some days you can’t go in the water. The main culprit behind bad water quality is heavy rain. Swimming may be forbidden during a downpour and even for several days after, especially if storm drains overflow. The water quality is tested twice a day. Again, your best bet is to call the info line: 514 280-0789.

The weather’s warm, the berries are in season, and we’re celebrating a fresh start at SouthWest! Come for Pastor Beryl’s first service, stay for the strawberry shortcake!

Vous l’aurez possiblement croisé à l’église en compagnie de sa femme Geneviève et de leurs deux fillettes. Mais saviez-vous que c’est Jean-François Major qui est responsable du «design» de notre site web, ainsi que notre logo et l’ensemble du «branding» de SouthWest?
C’est un gars talentueux qui, même s’il continuera à faire un peu de conception pour des clients existants, vient de se transformer en «rédacteur gentleman».
Depuis plusieurs années déjà il rédige des articles pour certains clients. Récemment il a décidé de se consacrer à ce métier à temps plein, ou presque.
Si vous avez accès à un iPad out une tablette, vous pouvez lire les contributions de Jean-François à un cahier récent paru sur La Presse + consacré au 40ième du Festival international de jazz de Montréal. Il a interviewé l’auteure-compositrice-interprète Montréalaise Charlotte Cardin.

You may have met him at church with his wife Geneviève and their two little girls. But did you know that Jean-François Major is responsible for the design of our website, as well as our logo and all the SouthWest branding?
He is a talented guy who, while continuing to do some design for existing clients, has just transformed himself into a "gentleman writer".
For several years now he has written articles for certain clients. Recently he decided to devote himself to this job full-time, or almost.

BBQ a good time for all!
A big thank you off the top to Dorothy Brown for organizing the food for SouthWest’s annual St-Jean barbecue last Saturday. Thanks also to Dennis (who somehow missed getting his picture taken) and Frank for manning the barbecue. And to everyone else who pitched in to make this SWU tradition a success. The weather was fine and the turnout was strong!

In Memoriam: Roy Sargent

Roy Horace Sargent, 1923-2019
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Roy Sargent, WW II Veteran, on May 6, 2019, at the age of 96.
Beloved husband of the late Kathleen-Elizabeth Nolan, cherished father of Eileen, devoted grandfather of Kevin and Devlin.
Roy must have fibbed about his age in order to enlist at the beginning of World War II. He served in Canada’s Merchant Navy, an accomplishment he was justifiably proud of. Roy was part of SouthWest’s Remembrance Day services for 20 years, arriving in dress uniform (yes, it still fit) and placing wreaths on the altar along with fellow veterans.

Until about three years ago, Roy could still be seen almost daily riding his bike around Verdun, or working in his community garden plot, rain or shine. Many of his church friends were lucky recipients of fresh produce from the garden. His early rhubarb was especially coveted.
Roy attended services at the church and sang in the choir every Sunday until his health began to fail. He also faithfully attended Wednesday worship at the Mission until it ended a few years back. Roy was often charged with helping Rev. David choose the hymns. Roy will be sadly missed by his SouthWest family and all who knew him.
The family will receive condolences on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 from 10:30 am to 11:45 pm at Yves-Légaré Funeral Complex in Verdun (5784 Verdun avenue, corner Manning).
Rev. David will lead a Celebration of Life service Tuesday at 11:45, to be followed by interment at the Field of Honour cemetery in Pointe Claire.
Those wishing to offer condolences to the family can also do so on the Yves Légaré website.

Mark your calendars! Our returning cast and some enthusiastic newcomers will be putting on another musical this spring, Malice in the Palace. It is the story of Esther in the Bible, told in a way that is both humorous and thought-provoking. First performance is on Sunday, May 12th @ 10:30am. A great Mother’s Day treat! A second performance will take place on Sunday, May 26th @ 3:00pm. A freewill offering to help defray our costs would be greatly appreciated.
