Verdun Vigil planned for 2nd anniversary of Quebec Mosque shooting

On January 29th, it will be two years since six men were gunned down in their place of worship in Ste-Foy, Quebec. Many events are planned across Canada to commemorate the tragedy. Here in Verdun, a vigil is planned, just as it was following the shooting, in front of Verdun metro station (right next to Verdun borough hall), on Tuesday, January 29 at 5:30PM. This day is being named a day of Action Against Islamophobia and Racism. You are invited to bring your own candle in a show of solidarity among communities.

This week (Jan. 25-31) has been named the first annual Muslim Awareness Week in the Montreal area, with a number of interfaith events planned. the goal is simple: Getting to know each other/ Apprendre à se connaître.

“Montreal City Mission & St. James United Church are organizing a public talk with Montreal youth leaders for Muslim Awareness Week. The panelists come from diverse backgrounds and are involved in concrete projects that respond to needs in our community. They will share how they replace the mind set of exclusion with one that embraces the 'other' as friend.”
Sonali Kamick from the CBC Radio show 'All in the Weekend', will be their mistress of ceremonies.

Job Offer: Agent(e) de milieu TCFV

Sandra Bustamante, who has held the position of Agente de milieu with the Table de concertation famille de Verdun for the last year and a half, is moving on to a position with the Centre Social d’Aide aux Immigrants. Sandra has been a frequent presence at the Mission, whether at Welcome Wednesday, Meli-Melo or the Halte allaitement on Fridays, all in the interest of getting to know our families and their needs. We will miss her but wish her all the best in her new position. We look forward to working with whoever takes over as agent(e) de milieu. Could it be you?

Sandra Bustamante quitte son poste d’agente de milieu à la Table de concertation familiale de Verdun (TCFV) pour occuper un poste au Centre social d’aide aux immigrants. Sandra a été fréquemment présente à la Mission, que ce soit au repas communautaire Mercredi M’attend, au Méli-Mélo ou à la Halte allaitement de vendredi, dans le but de mieux connaître nos familles et leurs besoins. Elle nous manquera, mais nous lui souhaitons le meilleur dans ses nouvelles fonctions.

La Table de concertation Famille de Verdun (TCFV) est un regroupement de partenaires issus des milieux communautaires, institutionnels, municipal, scolaires et des services de garde de Verdun. Ces partenaires se sont mobilisés autour de la mise en place d’actions préventives visant le bon développement global des toutpetits et le soutien aux familles vulnérables dont les enfants ont moins de 5 ans.

PROFIL DU POSTE : Sous la supervision de la coordonnatrice, la personne agente de milieu aura les responsabilités suivantes :
➢ Connaître et travailler en collaboration avec les ressources de Verdun ;
➢ Identifier et investir les lieux de fréquentation des familles ;
➢ Rejoindre les familles isolées et/ou vulnérables sur le territoire ;
➢ Déterminer avec elles leurs besoins et les soutenir dans leurs démarches pour y répondre ;
➢ Orienter et référer ces familles vers des ressources et, si nécessaire, les accompagner ;
➢ Accueillir ces familles lors d’activités et les soutenir dans leur intégration ;
➢ Participer aux réunions et comités lorsque demandé ;
➢ Représenter la TCFV lorsque mandaté ; ➢ Réaliser toutes autres tâches connexes à la fonction.

EXIGENCES :
➢ Domaine d’étude et d’expérience en lien avec l’emploi ;
➢ Expérience en intervention familiale et animation de groupe ;
➢ Grande capacité d’écoute, beaucoup d’entregent et de respect ;
➢ Sensibilité aux problématiques sociales ;
➢ Capacité à intervenir en contexte multiculturel ;
➢ Bilinguisme obligatoire ;
➢ Autonomie et aptitude au travail d’équipe ;
➢ Connaissance de la suite Microsoft Office et d’Internet ;

CONDITIONS : Contrat débutant dès que possible et renouvelable annuellement
Horaire variable de 28h par semaine comprenant des soirs et fins de semaine.
Salaire de 20 $ à 23 $ de l’heure selon expérience et compétence.

SouthWest Children’s Christmas Celebration: Seeking Stocking Stuffers!

For eleven years now, SouthWest Mission in Verdun has focused its energy on reaching out to the community. Once again this December, we are organizing a Christmas Celebration for approximately 100 children in the Verdun area.

Our goal this year is to provide each child with a Christmas stocking that they will “stuff” themselves. At the party, children will participate in fun-in-the-spirit of Christmas activities that in return will give to others (i.e. prepare a Christmas card or message for someone in a seniors’ residence) and then have the opportunity to select “stocking stuffers” for their own stocking.

 In order to make this happen, we are looking for donations of NEW and GENTLY USED stocking stuffers: action figurines, Barbies, games, colouring books, legos,  candies, new mitts and socks… anything that could fit in a stocking! We’re asking you to go through your toy boxes and see what you might pass along. Or what about setting up a box at your workplace? Donations will be received at church on Sunday, or at the Mission during activities there. It’s never a bad idea to call ahead.

With the Harvest Season coming to an end, it is that time of the year to thank mother nature for the bountiful crops she has provided. What better way to celebrate this moment than with a Community Harvest Party? SouthWest is a recipient of a $1000 grant from the Aviva Community Fund. So what are we doing with the money? Having friends over, of course!
Please join SouthWest and their team on Wednesday September 26 for a very special Welcome Wednesday Community lunch at 12:30 and visit our Mini Market for some fresh fruits and vegetables at great prices!

First Meli-Melo of the School Year!

If you look at your calendar, you might notice that September 23rd is actually the 4th Sunday of September, but we’re advertising Messy Church on the 3rd Sunday of the month. What?
You’re right: we’re messing with you. This month our informal celebration is the fourth Sunday, but moving forward it will be the third. If you’re the type who likes to mark their calendar ahead of time, here are the next dates:

Meet the Candidates/ Rencontre avec les candidats

Derrière les partis politiques, il y a des hommes et des femmes engagés. Qui sont-ils? Qui sont les candidats de Verdun aux élections provinciales? Qu’est-ce qui les animent et quels sont leurs enjeux prioritaires? Voilà ce à quoi veut répondre cette rencontre d’idées le 19 septembre à 18h30 à la Mission du Sud-Ouest.

Les 6 candidats de Verdun seront assis chacun à une table et par « tranche » de 12 minutes de petits groupes pourront échanger avec eux sur divers sujets. C’est presqu’un « speed dating politique »! L’idée est de vous donner réellement la chance d’échanger, d’argumenter et surtout de mieux connaître chacun des candidats. Vous pourrez ainsi faire un choix éclairé pour les élections!

Cette événement est ouvert à tous les Verdunois: familles, aînés, franco/anglo... les enfants sont les bienvenue! (Baby friendly)

Behind the political parties, there are committed men and women. Who are they? Who are #Verdun's candidates in the provincial elections? What drives them and what are their priority issues? That's what this meeting of ideas means to answer on September 19th at 6:30PM at SouthWest Mission.

The 6 candidates from Verdun will each sit at a table and small groups will be able to discuss with them on various topics for 12 minute "slices" of time. It's almost a political speed dating! The idea is to really give you the chance to exchange, to argue and especially to better know each candidate. You will be able to make an informed choice for the elections!

This event is open to all Verduners: families, seniors, franco / anglo ... children are welcome! (Baby friendly)

September Food Calendars

Did you know that every week day, seniors can drop in to a Snack Bar (casse-croûte) at the Centre des ainés located in the Marcel Giroux community centre, any time between 10AM and 3PM? This is just one resource to discover by consulting these monthly calendars put out by Verdun sans faim. One focuses on community meals, the second on markets, food banks and collective kitchens.

Saviez-vous que chaque semaine, de lundi à vendredi, 10H à 15H, les ainés sont acceuillis au Casse-croûte du Centre des ainés localisé au Centre communautaire Marcel-Giroux? Ceci n'est qu'un des ressources alimentaires à découvrir dans les calendriers mensuels fourmis par Verdun sans faim. Où manger vous dirige vers les repas communautaires; Ou cuisiner est votre resource en épiceries à bas prix et cuisines collectives.
